Celluloid Dreams The Directors Label

Often cited alongside the great Russian masters such as Tarkovsky, Aleksandr Sokurov is a giant of modern cinema.

Well known and respected as both a documentary filmmaker and as a feature filmmaker, this collection packages some of his most important works in the latter category. The collection includes the first film to really bring him to national attention, Mother and Son and its companion piece Father and Son – both deep meditations on family bonds and the larger questions of life, death and spirituality. The collection also includes Sokurov’s most commercially successful film, Russian Ark, the first “unedited” film consisting of one continuous single take lasting around 90 minutes. The film takes us on a visually hypnotic journey in and around the Hermitage museum, recounting two hundred years of Russian history. A historical achievement that will be watched and talked about by many generations to come.
